Late in the evening, with the overhead lights off, this brass desk lamp lays one long bar of light across the page and leaves the rest of the room to the dark. The bar pivots on a small brass knuckle at the top of the stem, so it can sit level over a desk or tilt toward a chair.

The lamp is drawn in three lines: a slim round stem, a flat disc base and a long bar that carries the light. Because the light comes from a bar rather than a bulb under a shade, it falls as a long strip across a keyboard, a ledger or an open book. The brushed brass reads soft gold in daylight and turns warmer as the room dims. Tilt the bar up and it washes the wall behind; set it level and it becomes a reading light. The small lamp is 13 in wide and 16.9 in tall (33 × 43 cm) and weighs about 4.2 lb. The large is 16.9 in wide and 20.9 in tall (43 × 53 cm) and weighs about 5.3 lb. The small suits a nightstand, a narrow console or a compact desk; the large spreads its light over a full desk or a reading table. Leave a little clearance around the head so the bar can tilt freely. Sizes are measured by hand and can vary slightly.
The body is H65 brass, a copper alloy, with an acrylic diffuser over the light. Unplug the lamp before cleaning, then dust with a soft dry cloth. Skip metal polish and abrasive cleaners, which can mark the brushed finish.
Does it need a bulb? No. The light source is built into the bar, and the button switch moves between its three color temperatures.
