Rough outside, smooth within: this silver gray travertine shallow bowl keeps the pitted, weathered skin of the stone on its outer wall and a finer surface inside, where silver and brown bands run across the bowl like water lines.

Design notes
Travertine forms in layers, and the gray variety shows them as soft silver and taupe bands. The outer wall is left rough and pocked, in the wabi-sabi spirit of keeping irregularity rather than polishing it away. Under a lamp in the evening, the pits throw tiny shadows that make the stone look older than it is. Hold keys, a pillar candle or a few dried stems in it, or set it out empty. More stone and sculptural pieces live in decorative objects.
Size & fit
At 9.8 in across and 2.2 in tall it sits low on a coffee table or console and works as a centerpiece on a small dining table. The sides curve up from a narrower base, so it looks lighter than a flat slab of stone.
Materials & care
Natural silver-gray travertine. Every bowl has its own banding, pits and color shifts, so yours will differ from the photos. Dust with a soft dry cloth or wipe with a barely damp one. Keep acids such as citrus and vinegar off the surface, since they can etch stone. Lift it rather than slide it across wood furniture.
Good to know
Is it a tray or a bowl? A shallow bowl. The sides curve up to a 2.2 in rim, deeper than a flat tray, so loose things stay put.
What is included? One travertine bowl.
